Boat Anti-Fouling

Why Boat Anti-Fouling is important …

Regular Antifouling is an all important factor in keeping your boat performing the way it should do. A dirty hull can reduce speed, increase fuel consumption and hinder you boat’s sea-worthiness.

At ADG marine we provide a professional antifouling service, paying particular attention to all aspects of the job, proper perpetration, correct primer systems and abiding to the antifoul manufacturers recommendations on paint thickness – you can rest assured that you are getting a professional job that lasts!

Antifouling paint consists of a specialized application to the ship or boats hull, designed to slow the attachment of marine microbes to the bottom of the vessel that  affect its performance and longevity. This coating on the hull gives you other benefits, for instance providing an obstacle to corrosion on hulls that will degrade the metal, or simply to improve the water flow past the vessels hull.

Marine growth can affect performance in several ways.

First, the top speed from the ship progressively declines as the hull becomes fouled with marine growth. Fouling also hampers a ship’s capacity to sail upwind.

Secondly, some marine growth, for instance shipworms, could bore into the hull causing severe damage as time passes.

Third, the ship may transport harmful marine microbes into other areas, which can in some cases cause problems with the authorities when you dock.

Biofouling includes the accumulation of plants, algae, microbes etc on wet surfaces.

On sea-going vessels, this may lead to a considerable increase in fuel consumption.

Modern antifouling paints are formulated with organotin compounds, copper, or other biocides – agents which significantly slow down the growth and development of algae, barnacles, and other marine microbes.

“Hard bottom paints” (also known as “non-sloughing” bottom paints), can be bought in a number of types. “Contact leaching paints” create a porous film. Biocides are trapped in the pores, and released gradually.  Hard bottom paints have Teflon and silicone films, which are too slippery for growth to remain.  SealCoat systems, which need to be expertly applied, dry with little fibers sticking out from the coating surface. These tiny fibers move around in the water, acting as a deterrent against bottom growth.
